![]() ![]() The spores of this species are very fine, and unlike many other species, do not stick to surfaces or skin easily. Its simple appearance belies a fiendishly intricate adaption to the climate of Skyrim. It has been demonstrated that, like a number of cold - adapted fungi in Skyrim, it strongly favours high background magicka.ĭespite this hardiness however, it can be hard to find, as it reproduces and grows very slowly. Due to its hardy nature, the White Cap can grow almost anywhere, and has a resilience to sunlight and wind thanks to its thick white outer skin. The fungus is found throughout Skyrim, in all holds except Haafingar, where prevailing winds presumably prevent the settling of its windborne spores from further inland, and Eastmarch, where the ashy, sulphurous soil is inimical to the White cap’s mycelium. Often the caps will group around small rocks and detritus - while hardy, the juvenile form is susceptible to damage and thus sheltered locations are more likely to bring the fruiting body to maturity. The underside, unusually, does not present any gills but instead a porous spongy surface, which can range from light grey or even beige, to creamy white. ![]() The cap can range from an inch to 6½ inches in diameter, with a very flat morphology, somewhat reminiscent of a parasol. A highly resilient fungus, its fleshy caps provide a bland but edible food source in areas where little else grows.Ī large capped bolete, this fungus is distinctively larger than most other fungi. Other regional names include Frost cap or Ghost cap, as it is present in areas along the frozen shore of the sea of ghosts. One of the more overlooked mushrooms in Skyrim, the White Cap is amongst a scarce few fungi that have fully adapted to the bitterly cold climate. ![]() Excerpt from “The Fungi of Skyrim, A Compendium”, by Hakan Toraldsson White Cap ![]()
